The adventures of parenthood continue as Nic deals with a sick child for most of the week, which Dili can sympathise with given she spends her days avoiding the Petri dish of small children in her classroom. To keep our minds off our germaphobia, we look a story about Bundeswehr food cuts, Simon takes us through a very German problem in New Zealand, and Dili goes hunting for a new shop.
After a weekend of fun at Nürnberg’s annual Badentreffen open air festival, Nic is still recovering from too many pints of…fun? We talk about one of Germany’s best festivals, and some weird interactions with the locals. We ask whether anyone can really tell the difference between a lioness and a pig, politicians on holiday, low-fi solutions to social media, and bans on junk food advertising.
We sweat through this week’s show, and consider relocating to the basement. We’re hot under the collar not only because of the summer sun, but also from discussing the average German propensity for public nudity at the swimming pool. Dili continues her quest to make Nic eat fruit, we discuss a German joke on Twitter that got out of hand, and learn what jumping sheep have to do with the Bundestag.
After a week off, Dili is back in the co-host hot seat, and comes equipped with questions about Nic’s adventures on St Patrick’s Day. We tackle the thorny issue of Wahlrechtsreform after the German government voted to change the current election system, and we finish on the announcement that one of Germany’s largest department store groups is planning to close stores across the country.
Simon is out with Covid, which leaves Nic to try and comprehend the massive changes happening in German politics since the invasion of Ukraine. Given the current situation, it didn’t feel right to record a wholly new podcast this week, so after a short intro and discussion on Ukraine, the invasion and Germany’s response, we’ve chosen some of our favourite segments from the last year to replay.
