It’s a race against time to record the podcast this week as Nic’s access to the internet could be shut-off at any moment by the owners of a Bavarian guest house he’s staying in. No matter, Dili has important updates on her adopted pigeon family, Nic tells us about battles in Wales, we discuss the anti-Semitism scandal in the Bavarian government, and we ask if we need more pirates in the Bundestag.
A listener email about the coronation finally breaks our resolve, and we address the exciting news that a rich man will finally get to sit on his mother’s golden chair. We also discuss the many public appearances of Markus Söder, the recent criticism of Annalena Baerbock, Maibäume appearing all around Bavaria, and scandal merchant Boris Palmer.
Sadly Dili was out this week, luckily for us freelance writer & journalist Aaron Gasch Burnett was able to step into the breach. Aaron discusses his experience of hosting the I am Germany Twitter account, his German grandparents, and schools Nic on Canadian rodeo. Aaron also shares his thoughts on changes to citizenship rules in Germany, and we finish on the rivalry between Bavaria and Berlin.
It’s nice that after all this time, Germany still has the capacity to surprise, as Dili discovers when she learns something new about her washing machine, and German, that’s been staring her in the face for 12 years. After four days back in Germany from adventures in the UK, Nic is feeling a bit weird. Thankfully, Simon is on hand to talk through the process of returning home from, well, home. One significant difference is how low-fi much of life in the south of Germany can be, but is that maybe a positive? Then again, not having to deal with British indirectness is certainly a positive about being back in Bavaria.
We cower in fear as the skies around Bavaria turn yellow, luckily for us it’s only a saharan sandstorm. Wonders of the natural world aside, Simon and Nic discuss returning to the garden after the winter break as Germany finally comes back to life with the arrival of spring.
